A Night To Remember

Friday, September 30 marked DARPAN Magazine’s 2nd annual Extraordinary Achievement Awards Ceremony. Held at Royal King Banquet Hall, the event was nothing short of spectacular.

Guests were dressed to the nines, and were welcomed on a red carpet that led into a reception area. A jazz band was playing while attendees mingled. The distinguished crowd included Member of Parliament, Nina Grewal and Members of Legislative Assembly Jagrup Brar, Harry Bains, Raj Chouhan, Bruce Ralston, Sue Hamell, and even the leader of the BC New Democrats, Adrian Dix, was there. City of Surrey Councillors Barinder Rasode and Tom Gill made an appearance. Director of Outreach Pamela Martin, and notable community members Tony Singh, Gulzar Cheema, and Hari Varshney were also there.

After being seated in the main hall, Belle Puri, from CBC, kicked off the night by introducing keynote speaker Mr. Narayanan Krishnan. Recognized as one of CNN’s top 10 Heroes in 2010, having Mr. Narayanan share his story with the audience was an event highlight. He received a standing ovation from attendees.

Mr. Narayanan was presented with a $5000 cheque from Gurvinder Hundal and Ramneek Dhillon of DARPAN, and was incredibly gracious in receiving the gift. Later in the evening, Gurvinder and Ramneek showed their support for another great cause and presented a $5000 cheque to the Honourable Wally Oppal, who spoke on behalf of Canadian Cancer Society. Mr. Oppal shared his personal story about his battle with cancer, and it was another event highlight.

The evening’s entertainment included a stunning fashion show put on by Crossover Bollywood Sé, as well as a Michael Jackson inspired performance by Signature, the hit British dance group that was discovered on “Britain’s Got Talent.”

This year’s awards gala was nothing short of exceptional and guests have been raving about it since.

The Dream

DARPAN’s Extraordinary Awards honours exceptional achievements among members of the South Asian community. Gurvinder Hundal and Ramneek Dhillon felt the South Asian community needed an event to recognize some of their brightest members’ contributions to society. The vision became a reality in 2010, when the first annual Extraordinary Awards ceremony was held.

Too often, individuals believe that it is impossible to create change, but this year’s award ceremony showed that ordinary South Asians can achieve extraordinary results. The hope is to empower the entire community to act on a grassroots level. Whether an individual influences just one person or thousands, these awards are meant to inspire members of our community to take action.

Narayanan Krishnan, the keynote speaker, epitomizes this essence and we hope that his efforts will inspire and mobilize other South Asians. Committed to selflessly serving the hungry and the destitute, he put it best when he said that “action starts with the individual, and a bunch of small actions by one person can make a big impact. When you combine the actions of many passionate individuals, working together, the results can be monumental.”

Narayanan Krishnan-International Sensation
In honour of your extraordinary achievements and commitment to bettering the livelihood of others on a global scale

In 2003, Krishnan founded the Akshaya Trust. Akshaya means “never-ending” in Indian Sanskrit. That is exactly what Narayanan Krishnan and his team of volunteers provide for the homeless in India – never ending food, care and, most importantly, love. Over nine years, Akshaya Trust has been able to serve almost 1.7 million hot meals to the homeless. What started as feeding one person turned into a NPO that feeds more than 450 people three meals a day.

“Action starts with the individual, and a bunch of small actions by one person can make a big impact. DARPAN has done an extraordinary job of recognizing these individuals. What a wonderful evening.”

Dr. Aly Kanani presented the award for International Sensation

Harjit Sajjan- Breaking Barriers
In honour of your extraordinary achievements as a courageous servant of  The Canadian Forces

On September 11, 2011, history was made when Lieutenant-Colonel Harjit Singh Sajjan was the Regimental Guidon of the British Columbia Regiment. Sajjan, who is known for his commitment to the Canadian forces, is the first Sikh in Canada to take command of an army regiment. He was also among the first turbaned Sikhs to undergo military training. To date, he has completed four operational deployments that included Bosnia-Herzegovina and Afghanistan.

When they said it was a red carpet gala event, it really lived up to its name. From the time that you arrived and were met, it just had a sense of professionalism to it. More importantly, I think, was what it did for the community in terms of recognizing people’s achievements.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who went above and beyond to ensure an exceptional event. This includes the coordinators, speakers, photographers, videographers, makeup artists, hosts and caterers. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.
Already being compared to the Academy Awards, DARPAN hopes to make next year’s ceremony bigger than ever. We will be focusing on diversity as one of the main foundational principles. By bringing together different cultures, we can all share in the achievements and contributions of South-Asians in British Columbia. We also hope to continue expanding our reach to include all Canadians in the festivities.
We look forward to seeing you all at next year’s ceremony!
