As a championship-winning athlete, Rajni Sharma is disciplined, determined and has a competitive edge. All these traits have led to a successful 22-year career as a Financial/Insurance Advisor with Sun Life Financial, a Canadian company boasting longevity of 140 years.

Growing up in Jalandhar, Rajni played competitive field hockey in high school and was selected to play for Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women. This left winger participated in three World Cups and her team, representing Punjab, won the Nationals in India for 12 consecutive years.

She married in 1980, and immigrated to Prince Rupert, Canada in 1981. After raising three children and obtaining a Masters degree in English, she decided to get back into the workforce in 1990 and joined Sun Life. At that time, managers often went on ‘cold calls’ with advisors, and as such, after visiting her first two clients, Rajni was told “you’re a natural!” In her first year with the company, she was the number one advisor in Canada.

In terms of investment, Rajni says “If you’re gong to invest your money somewhere, you cannot do better than an insurance company.”

“I want to urge people to educate themselves on how to buy insurance. Look for the brand, the longevity of the company, what kind of company the broker is suggesting? Research that company, what’s their rating? Then come to the agent, who can guide and advise you properly.”

As of late, her passion is estate and financial planning and she advices individuals, especially from the South Asian community, who have worked hard to build their wealth to be wise in terms of tax planning. “I take pride in providing a solution to the problem,” she says adding it’s a great feeling to educate clients about financial or insurance opportunities. In addition, she is fluent in English, Punjabi and Hindi.

Her message to women in business and all walks of life is “first and foremost, believe in yourself. I’m a person with that frame of mind, where I believe I can do anything, if it wasn’t insurance, and I was doing something else, I would have done it equally well. So, believe in yourself and choose the field that you would like to excel in,” she says with a smile.
