1. Hargobind Wrestling Club President Satnam Johal carried the Olympic torch in Surrey. Hundreds of South Asians watched the 52-year-old, as he ran down the street with the flame above his head and to the beat of a drum that was played by one of his family members.
2. The India Mahila Association (IMA) celebrated Interntional Womens Day at Bollywood Banquet Hall on March 5th. As a night to remember, attendees enjoyed dinner, entertainment, and lots of singing and dancing. India Mahila Association is a grassroots, non-profit organization whose main focus has been empowering women, raising awareness and education on women’s issues. |
3. Canadian Pubjabi Poetry Writers were recently recognized. Gill Moranwali received the Isher Singh Attari Memorial Award and Manjeet Meet received the Dr. Surjit Singh Sethi Memorial Awards in Surrey for their poetry and drama writing.
4. Students were honoured by the India Club for outstanding academic and sports achievement. Shraddha Ramesh, Rishu Suri, Chanmit Phulka, Pooja Prakash, Jasjeet Singh, and Inveet were this year’s award recipients.
5. Vancouver school teacher, Gurpreet Kaur Gill photographed with her recently published book ‘Lotus of the Lake’. Book proceeds will go to the Lotus Foundation for children to raise $3 million for a children’s complex |
for marginalized youth in Banglore, India.
6. The Child Haven International and community of Vancouver’s ‘Together We Can Do More’ Fundraiser held a local event recently. The organizations’ help to shed light on the issues faced by children and women in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Tibet.
7. Grads of 2010 and upcoming grads were able to gather ideas and celebrate on January 31st. Armaan DBG presented Grad 2010 Fashion Show & Gala at the Hilton Metrotown Hotel and grads were able to check out various vendors and make the necessary preparations for their big day. |
