Reflections of Our Wedding Day
KIRAN PURBA & RAJ DHALIWAL AUGUST 2, 2009
PHOTOGRAPHED BY AAA MOVIES

Our official engagement was just a few days before the wedding on July 30, 2009 at the Mirage Hall. On June 8th, Kiran’s 24th birthday, I took her up to Whistler for the day. During the entire day, we just walked around in the village, went shopping and just relaxed. I proposed to her right before we were going to head back home in front of a gorgeous lake overlooking the balcony. She cried and was speechless – yes I got on my knee and proposed. Along with the ring, I gave her a bouquet of red roses. The entire way home she could not stop smiling and just stared at the ring.
Tell us about your wedding?
Everything went on time – from start to finish. Raj walked in with his sisters and groomsmen in at exactly 10:30 and Kiran walked in with her brothers at 10:50 and the lava were completed by 11:20am.
If it wasn’t for our parents and siblings, this day would have not been possible. Everyone went out of their ways to ensure we were happy and not worried about a single thing. Kiran remembers her sister leaning over after all the lava were completed and said “Its 11:20 and your married!” Raj will never forget the first time he saw Kiran in her wedding lengha. He was tempted to look back when she walked into the Gurdwara, but obviously could not. After the ceremony was over. he got the chance to finally tell her how beautiful she looked.
Bride and Groom – outfits, colors, flowers, special details?
Brides outfit: a traditional red with gold and silver. The dupata was purposely made in net so that I could show my hair piece in the back as I had a long braid. My flowers were red and white roses finished off with crystals. I had a beautiful crystal red set on with a headpiece and a tikka. My choora wasn’t just a typical red one – every bangle had crystals on it with a mix of red and crème. I also wore payal with gold heels.
Groom: Gold Sherwani – with detailed work on it. He wore a red pajami and red undershirt with a red turban. He had a gold kirpan with gold Punjabi shoes.

Honeymoon locale(s)?
Mexico, Cabo San Lucas
What have been some of the biggest challenges you have overcome as a couple?
Over the years we have learned each other’s personality and how to work together as one not against each other when overcoming barriers.
What issues are hardest to compromise?
The hardest issue to compromise over is who gets what side of the bed Other then that, we are not only a married couple, but best friends who seem to see eye to eye on a lot of issues and decisions.
How do you make decisions?
Communication. It is very important to take that time to sit with each other and together make a decision. If one makes the decision without the other, its important to stick by your partners side and support them. If we are disagreeing with something…we do paper, rock, scissors best out of three.
What have your grown to love about each other?
Kiran: I have learned to love Raj’s patience and his approaches to overcoming any barriers. I’ve learned from Raj to make the best of each day and to be thankful for what we have. Raj: I have learned to love Kiran’s goal driven attitude as she is always striving to be the best at anything she does. She is the type of person who can motivate me in any situation. Her strength, courage, fairness and consistency has and will always be motivating and that is what sets Kiran apart from everyone else.
