UBC Appoints Arvind Gupta as Next President and Vice-Chancellor

    The University of British Columbia appointed Dr. Arvind Gupta, a computer science professor as their 13th president and vice-chancellor Tuesday.

    "On behalf of Council and Student Executive team, I'd like to welcome Dr. Arvind Gupta and let him know we are all looking forward to meeting with him once he begins his term on July 1," AMS President Tanner Bokor mentioned to media.

    "We are excited to discuss the major opportunities and challenges facing our members and explore how to establish an efficient and collaborative working relationship with his office," Bokor stated.

    Dr. Gupta has previously served as CEO and scientific director of Mitacs (Mathematics of Information Technology & Complex Systems), an organization that co-ordinates collaborative industry-university research projects.

    "Our mutual goal is to improve the quality of the student experience at UBC and we will continue to work in tandem with the President and the rest of the UBC Administration on the various issues this encompasses,” Bokor added.

    Gupta will take over his new role as president and vice-chancellor in the first week of July and will succeed Stephen Toope who was on the job for eight years.
