Vancouver mother guilty of infanticide of two new born sons

Garima Goswami, Darpan, 11 Apr, 2014 12:30 PM

Sarah Leung, 28, has been convicted of two counts of infanticide in the separate deaths of her two newborn sons.

Leung was charged with second-degree murder of her two sons that were delivered in the toilet of her family home. In both cases, which occurred in 2009 and 2010, Leung disposed the babies in plastic bags that she tossed in the garbage.

The first baby delivered in April 2009 was discovered by her father in a clear bag outside the house and asked his son to inform the police. However, in the second delivery that happened in March 2010, the baby was not discovered because the garbage was picked up.

Crown lawyer Sandra Cunningham told the jury that the babies' father was aware of Leung's pregnancies and was happy, but Leung kept their relationship secret.

Her family was uninformed of her pregnancies because she was terrified of their reaction and was also unaware of her relationship with her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, the defence claimed that the woman did not intend to kill her babies but was in a disturbed state of mind when she gave birth.

The court also heard that Leung was raised by an "abusive and controlling father."

"Sarah was trapped between two worlds, the world she wanted and the world she couldn't leave," said defence lawyer Richard Fowler.
