Providing unsurpassed quality, Purple Tulip is the brainchild of long-time friends from the industry, Piyush Sahay (Chef Pi) and Kundan Khullar (Dan).
With over 25 years of international culinary experience, Chef Pi, after completing his degree in Hotel Management, worked at Michelin star restaurants in France and top hotels in India, Mauritius, and Kenya before moving to Canada. Aside from heading the kitchens of Cathay Pacific’s inflight catering facility and UBC Point Grey Campus, Pi has competed in multiple culinary challenges across North America, winning Gold & Silver medals. He was also awarded the CATIE (Catered Art Through Innovative Excellence) award by the International Caterers Association, Las Vegas. HH Dalai Lama, Rev. Bishop Tutu, Emperor & Empress of Japan, King of Mongolia, Princess of Japan & the President of Mexico are just a few celebrities that have enjoyed his finely honed culinary skills. Chef Pi is also a Certified Chef (CCC) and a member of BC Chefs Association, Canadian Culinary Federation and World Association of Chefs' Societies.
Dan’s background entails a management degree in UK, followed by a degree in Law and entry into commodity trading and bulk food production and sales. He found his calling in different large food processing corporations and finally at a Japanese multinational, where he managed their steel division and established their agribusiness division, spearheading the development of Ready to Eat (RTE) frozen Indian meals for Japanese retail supermarkets. After transitioning to Canada, he set up agribusiness divisions for the largest food processor in the country in the Indian sub-continent and set up a food production business making RTE products for the retail and food service sector.
Dan and Pi met in Mumbai and Delhi on a few occasions and struck up a friendship. Over a few good bevvies & dinners, an idea of starting a quality Indian influenced diner came to be. Laced with bold flavors of India with the ancient cooking techniques from the world's oldest civilization, teamed with the finesse and modern techniques of French and West Coast cuisine, a concept was born.
“The market needs good caterers, especially for Indian food, with many existing restaurants offering similar menus. Our aim is to serve the niche Indian market, those who enjoy good food and presentation.”, says Pi.
