Summer Fun

By Tarana Rana, 14 May, 2015

Summer is what Vancouverites dream of. As the days get warmer, you might be itching to get outside and bask in the sun. Luckily, there is no shortage of outdoor summer activities in Vancouver. Here is a quick list to get you started.

    Kayak in Deep Cove

There’s no better way to spend a warm summer’s day than kayaking in the tranquil waters around Deep Cove. Located in North Vancouver, this little seaside village is a must-visit for water sport enthusiasts. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the North Shore as you glide through the pristine ocean waters. You can rent kayaks, standup paddleboards and surf skis from Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak, which is located right on the water’s edge. After you’ve had enough, take a stroll down the main street and treat yourself to a delicious doughnut from Honey Doughnuts & Goodies. You won’t regret it.

    Visit Bowen Island

If you’re looking for a quick summer getaway, Bowen Island is a mere 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay. This relaxing, forested retreat has something to offer for everyone. For the sport enthusiasts, there is mountain biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking and golf courses to try. Those looking for a culture- fix will find it in the island’s many art galleries, theatre and concerts. History buffs should check out the Bowen Island Museum. Finally, enjoy a scrumptious meal at one of the many bistros, cafes or pubs on the island.

Make a splash at Granville Island Water Park

Cool down on a hot day at the Granville Island Water Park. One of the largest free outdoor water parks in North America; it’s a great spot to bring the kids. They are sure to have a blast roaming through the water pipes, sprays and slide. Located on Granville Island, the water park is open from the Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day (May 16 – September 7) between 10 am and 6 pm. You can make a day of it and explore the Kids Market and Granville Island Public Market while you’re at it.

    Stroll in VanDusen Botanical Garden
Hailed as one of the top ten public gardens in North America, a stroll through the VanDusen Botanical Gardens is an idyllic way to spend a leisurely afternoon. As you explore its scenic 55 acres, keep an eye out for some of the noteworthy structures – these include an authentic Korean pavilion, a traditional Scottish shelter, a stone garden and the pièce de résistance: a giant maze. Pack your own picnic lunch or purchase a ready-made basket for two from Truffles Café in VanDusen and enjoy it at the picturesque meadow garden.

    Take a river boat tour

If you’re up for something a little offbeat, opt for a sight-seeing river tour by Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tours company, and explore BC like never before. You’ll get a chance to sail to scenic places such as Pitt Lake, Steveston Harbour or North Arm aboard a catamaran. These tours include a narrated commentary and buffet-style luncheon, making it an experience to remember!

    Hit the beach

A day at the beach is a summer staple, and Vancouver’s got a number of amazing beaches to choose from. One of my personal favourites is Kitsilano “Kits” beach. Located in the Kitsilano neighborhood, the sandy beach is a perfect place to relax. It’s also home to Kits Pool – the longest pool in Canada. If you fancy a swim, be sure to check out this outdoor, saltwater pool!
