A Treasured Escape: Kauai

By Cassandra Anderton, 17 Nov, 2017
  • A Treasured Escape: Kauai

A beautiful place offering the right amount of calm and a plethora of adventurous activities

With direct flights, usually under $1,000 depending on the time of year, the Island of Kauai in Hawaii is an easy escape, with just the right amount of calm should you need it, and many options to be adventurous.

Kauai is Hawaii’s fourth largest island and it is so full of greenery that it’s often called the “Garden Isle,” vastly due to the generous rainfall. You’ll find Kauai at the northern tip of the Hawaiian Islands, with a range of geography contained within the 1,400 square kilometre island. The climate changes drastically from one region to another and there’s everything from deserts, to rainforests, beaches, swamps and mountains. Kauai’s average yearly temperatures range between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for travel year-round.

Stay

The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas

At the Westin Princeville, you will feel like you are at a luxury resort, while also enjoying the comforts of home. Accommodations include a kitchenette with a full size fridge, a washer/dryer, as well as access to self-serve barbecue grills. You’ll find four pools, golf, and tennis, a full fitness center to work off those holiday calories, weekly movie nights, and daily cultural activities. Don’t miss dining at the onsite restaurant, which features island-inspired cuisine and a five-course tasting menu each night.

Hanalei Colony Resort

When you really want to escape, the Hanalei Colony Resort is absolutely perfect and the only commercial property on the North Shore. The resort is set in a rare and beautiful setting where it is pretty much as Mother Nature created it. Enjoy the sunrise shimmering on the ocean, the hypnotic power of surging ocean waves, gentle sea mists, and strolls on the beach with no destination in mind; truly a place to reconnect after a hectic wedding schedule. Be prepared to completely unplug as suites do not have televisions, stereos, or phones. You can choose to dine on site or shop and prepare your own meals in your fully-equipped kitchen.

Koloa Landing Resort & Spa

The Koloa Landing Resort & Spa is a luxurious 4-star hotel conveniently located near the center of Koloa, a town filled with old-fashioned storefronts, gift shops, and restaurants. Stop by the Koloa History Center to learn about the town’s sweet heritage and enjoy local tourist attractions such as Poipu, Moir Gardens, and Kiahuna Golf Course not far from the hotel. There is an outdoor swimming pool at the hotel and spa/wellness facilities and on site spa services at the full service health spa. Note: This resort is not oceanfront.

To Do

On the one hand you could choose to take this opportunity for some real downtime as Kauai has a super laid-back feel. Casual days could include exploring the small town, drive down one-lane bridges and discovering the Island’s rich culture. Kauai is dramatically beautiful and it will stun you into relaxation.

If you should choose to enjoy the more adventurous aspects of the island, you’ll find a variety of outdoor activities and thrills. Kayak the Wailua River, snorkel on Poipu Beach, hike the trails of Kokee State Park, or go ziplining above Kauai’s lush valleys. Helicopter tours around the island offer a unique and one of a kind perspective of this Garden Isle and Na Pali Boat Tours take visitors along a 17-mile long coastline seeing dolphins, turtles and whales.

Horseback riding along the coastlines and cliffs is also an option for both beginners and experienced riders and you can even bicycle right down the Waimea Canyon and see what’s referred to as the grand canyon of the pacific.

Kauai’s wide range of accommodations suit all budgets, there’s the option of truly escaping, or enjoying a plethora of activities. Kauai has much to offer for every type of traveling couple.
