Why did you decide to migrate to Canada?

I decided to migrate to Canada for my higher education at Columbia College and for a better future for my family and me.

Which year did you migrate?

I migrated to Vancouver, Canada, from Amritsar, India, in December 2012 as an international student. My wife migrated to Canada in 2021.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

Canada is the land of opportunities. With quality education and transferable skills, I was able to establish my own business and support my family.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friend's place?

When I landed in Vancouver as an international student at Columbia College, I stayed in a rented basement with my friend.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

As it was my first time ever moving to a new place, leave alone a new country, the journey was a bit challenging. I found it a bit difficult to make new friends and learn to do almost everything by myself during the initial period.

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

In my opinion, if you have the right skills and education, finding a job is easy in Canada.

How do you see your future in Canada?

In the near future, I plan on buying a house here. The future here looks bright and filled with opportunities to grow and lead a better life with my family.

How has your overall journey in Canada been so far?

Despite the challenges, it has been a very successful and fulfilling journey. The challenges have helped me grow and evolve as a person.

Biggest problem

The biggest problem that I’ve faced so far is while trying to buy a house. The real estate market is volatile, and the prices are getting higher. Mortgage rates are also high, which adds to the expenses.

Resolution

My resolution is to grow my business and lead a better life.

Advice for immigrants

Be prepared for the tough times and learn from them. Be positive and be open to opportunities.

Memory

I miss my family and friends back home. I miss celebrating the festivals and special moments together.
