Top Minivan Picks 2014

Even though minivan’s popularity has slipped over the last few years, you have to admit these vehicles are the most efficient way of moving people and families around. The sliding side doors allow easy access for children and those with mobility problems to enter the seats. Generally seating comfort for seven to eight people is much better in a minivan than in comparable large crossovers and SUVs. The large rear door offers simple loading and unloading of all the things you need to carry when hauling a family. Today’s minivan has evolved into a very pleasant way to travel with friends.

Honda: Odyssey
If Chrysler has gone the root of practicality, Honda has gone high-tech. This available array of technology starts with HondaLink, which allows the driver to operate an array of features like recognition for cell phone and navigation systems. As well, the system will even link up with the iPhone/ Blackberry devices to send and receive different types of messages. Next is the forward-collision and lane departure systems, which enable you to have a better and safer drive. One feature I liked was the optional sunroof feature, something once available of many minivans. One feature that neat-freaks will absolutely love is the availability of a built-in vacuum system, a must have for messy children. One of the best features is that the Odyssey is a leader in fuel economy with a 7L per 100km fuel rating on the highway.

Toyota: Sienna
When it comes to the Sienna, Toyota has gone with a blend of high tech and practical. Fussy passengers will delight in the fact that the Sienna is available with a 3-zone temperature control system so everyone can be comfortable. Speaking of comfort, the Sienna offers second row seating that can be widened from a 3-person seat to captain chairs and centre child seat. To entertain the passengers, a dual view entertainment centre allows the widescreen to play two different programs at the same time. Those of you who may need to transport individuals with mobility issues might be interested in a Toyota approved conversion package, which includes a ramp for wheelchairs, lowered floors and a package that will lower the vehicle for easier entry and exit.

Chrysler: Dodge Grand Caravan & Chrysler Town and Country
This pair set the standard for all the rest when they were released, and have been the sales leaders and best sellers for 29-years running. The Grand Caravan starts at just $19,900, pretty well the least expensive minivan on the market. One of the innovative features the Dodge and Chrysler minivans has is the “Stow and Go” rear seats, which allows all of the rear seats to fold into the floor for a completely flat loading surface. With the standard 3.6L V6 engine, these twins are capable of towing 3600-pounds and with the towing package, you get a trailer sway dampening a real bonus if you tow regularly. The Town and Country models are also available with two blu-ray screens for second and third row passengers.

Looking over the Rogue for the first time you will notice that it really isn’t that small of a vehicle. In fact I would call it a generous mid-sized crossover.

I have always been a fan of the Mazda3, as its lines and practical size make it just about right for the kind of life I lead. That life is carrying around a lot of things especially car parts and tools and the Mazda3 Sport has wagon-like features making it easy to get things in and out

One of the more interesting designs to come from KIA in the last few years has to be the Soul. The square-like design of the car was an instant hit with me, as it seemed to be an ideal people mover

It has been a number of years since I have driven a vehicle with a price tag over $100,000 but it was well worth the wait. I had the opportunity to experience such a car with one of Mercedes-Benz top-of-the-line models – the S550 long wheel-base.

A few years ago when the Patriot arrived in showrooms, I immediately thought of the old boxy Jeep Cherokee, one of Jeep’s most popular selling vehicles. You have to admit that it is a practical design that gets the maximum cargo space in the smallest package.

I recently attended the inaugural Auto-biography event in Vancouver showcasing the 2013 Range Rover special edition model. Sipping mimosa’s and indulging in appetizers, we were taken back in time as we were re-introduced to Range Rover’s impressive history.
