Deepika Looks Fierce And Regal In First Poster Of ‘PADMAVATI'

Darpan News Desk IANS, 21 Sep, 2017 12:41 PM

On the auspicious occasion of Navratri on Thursday, the makers of period-drama film "Padmavati" unveiled the first look of the film in which actress Deepika Padukone looked every inch a reigning empress.

The first poster of the film shows Deepika donning a red lehenga and choli by designer duo Harpreet and Rimple, paired with elaborate Rajasthani jewellery by Tanishq.

Some 200 'karigars' (craftsmen) worked for 600 days to create some of the most iconic pieces that will be showcased in the movie. Each piece of jewellery worn in the movie plays a significant role in some of the most crucial scenes such as the celebration of Diwali, Holi, Ghoomer and the Jauhar scenes, said a statement.

The poster shows a group of women in veils standing behind Deepika who can be seen standing with folded hands. The actress is essaying the role of Rani Padmavati of Chittore.

The "Bajirao Mastani" actress captioned the first poster: "Devi Sthapna ke shubh avsar par miliye Rani Padmavati se 'Padmavati'."

The second poster also shows the actress, who is sporting a unibrow for the first time, standing inside what seems like a temple.

She captioned the second image: "'Padmavati'."

"Padmavati", which will release on December 1, tells the story of Alauddin Khilji, the medieval-era Delhi ruler who fell in love with Rajput queen Padmavati.

Actor Ranveer Singh, who is playing Khilji, also shared the poster and captioned it: " Mallika-e-Chittod - 'Padmavati'." Dire

cted by Sanjay Leela Bhansali -- known for his grand period dramas -- "Padmavati" also stars Shahid Kapoor.

The movie's shoot went through a lot of hurdles.

In January, activists of outfit Shri Rajput Karni Sena had assaulted Bhansali and vandalised the movie's Jaipur set over alleged distortions in the film's script.

Later, once the filmmaker had moved the film's shoot to Maharashtra, an outdoor set of the historic period drama in Kohlapur was reduced to ashes after two dozen unidentified persons torched it in March.

KARNI SENA TO OPPOSE 'PADMAVATI' SCREENING IF FACTS 'DISTORTED'

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, has said it will oppose screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavati" if facts are "distorted" in the film.

"Around 20 days back someone from Bhansali's team had called and told us to see the film, but we asked them to show it to historians and intellectuals. After that we have not heard anything from them," Lokendra Singh Kalvi, patron and founder of Shri Rajput Karni Sena, told IANS.

His comments come as the first look of Bhansali's much-awaited film, featuring Deepika Padukone, was released. The actor plays Rani Padmini or Padmavati of Chittor, alongside Ranveer Singh who plays Alauddin Khilji.

In January activists of the Karni Sena had protested and manhandled and misbehaved with the crew of Bhansali's "Padmavati" claiming that the filmmaker was distorting historical facts in the movie.

They had also damaged some cameras and other equipments. Bhansali had to stop the shooting.

"We will not allow distorted facts to be shown in the film at any cost, and will see to it that the film is not screened in half of India," Kalvi said.

The Karni Sena claimed that they have got a big library and that in no book is it written that Alauddin Khilji, a powerful ruler of the Chilli dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate in 13th-14th century, fell in love with Padmavati or that he was her lover.

"They are trying to defame Padmavati by distorting historical facts. It is not acceptable," an activist of Karni Sena said.

In March some miscreants broke the mirrors in Padmini Mahal (palace) in Chittorgarh Fort where Alauddin Khilji is believed to have seen Rani Padmavati or Padmini.

Shri Rajput Karni Sena claims that the mirror was invented years after Padmavati lived and therefore it is a completely untrue story.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE’S PADMAVATI UNIBROW IS MAKING GIRLS FEEL PROUD OF THEIR OWN

Deepika Padukone debuted a surprising new look for her upcoming film Padmavati. While many loved it unconditionally, a few are finding it hard to digest her unibrow.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RANI PADMINI:

    1. The origins of the legend of Rani Padmini can be traced to the epic poem Padmavat, written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

    2. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati is based on the 14th Century siege of the Chittor fort when emperor Alauddin Khilji attacked Rajasthan in a bid to capture the beautiful queen, Padmini.

    3. However, legend goes, before Alauddin's troops could reach the Chittor fort, Rani Padmini, along with a hundred other Rajput women, committed Jauhar. Jauhar is the Hindu custom of self-immolation that groups of women used to commit in order to avoid rape or imprisonment by enemy forces.

    4. Now, the origins of Rani Padmini have been shrouded in doubt for a long time now. The first mention of the beautiful Rajput queen comes in the 16th century Sufi poet Jayasi's epic poem, Padmavat.

    5. Jayasi's work is a fictional retelling of the siege of Chittorgrah that Turkic emperor Alauddin Khilji indeed undertook in 1303.

    6. A few decades after Jayasi's Padmavat, came one of the most famous re-telling of the tale of Rani Padmini of Chittor. Abul Fazl, the famous chronicler of Mughal emperor Akbar's court, penned a work on Padmini that popularised the legend of the siege of Chittor.

    7. If at all Rani Padmini and Raja Ratan Singh existed in the first place, is hugely debatable. The topic saw even more discussions, including attacks on Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the crew of the film, in the last few months.

The work which is the beginning of the story of Rani Padmini, The Imperial Gazetter of India of 1909 states, "In the final verses of his work, the poet explains that it is all an allegory. By Chittor he means the body of man; by Ratan Singh, the soul; by the parrot, the guru or spiritual protector; by Padmavati, wisdom; by Alauddin, delusion, and so on."
