FIR Against Priya Varrier’s Viral Song For Hurting Religious Sentiments Of Muslims With A Wink

Darpan News Desk IANS, 14 Feb, 2018 01:36 PM

A wink, and a shy but mischievous smile by Malayalam actress Priya Prakash Varrier in a 28-second clip from a film song has turned the 18-year-old into an internet sensation.

However, the clip has not been approved by a group of Muslim youth from Hyderabad, who has filed a complaint at the Falaknuma Police Station against the makers of the song 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' from 'Oru Adaar Love' for allegedly hurting sentiments of Muslims.

According to the police official, the case was registered on a complaint by Abdul Muqeet and others, who alleged that the names of Prophet Mohammad and his wife Bibi Khadeeja were used in the song. They sought immediate ban on the song as it hurt their religious sentiments.

The DCP said the police were investigating the case and appropriate action would be taken after taking legal opinion and ascertaining the facts.

Abdul Muqeet, an engineering student, told reporters that he noticed the objectionable part of the song while listening to it on the internet. He informed his other friends and they decided to lodge a complaint with the police. He said if necessary they would take legal action against the filmmaker.

The first song of 'Oru Adaar Love' became viral on social media within few hours of its release because of Malayalam actor Priya Prakash Varrier's cute articulations and wink.

Priya, who features in the clip from "Manikya malaraya poovi" -- a song from her forthcoming Malayalam film debut "Oru Adaar Love" -- has, in her own words, become a "national trend" on social media.

Thank you for all the love and support💙

The song was launched online on February 9. It garnered almost 10,000,000 views on YouTube till Tuesday evening.

She registered on Twitter only earlier this month, and has already garnered a following of 60,000. On Instagram, she has got 2.5 million followers, and got a blue tick. She also has a verified official Facebook page.

Priya, who belongs to Thrissur in Kerala, is ecstatic.

"Can't believe this, #NationalTrend. Thank you so much for your love and support," Priya tweeted on Monday as she shared a snapshot of Twitter's viral trends.

Her expressive eyes, innocence and smile in the clip wherein she gets flirty with her co-actor, have done the trick.

Telugu film actor Allu Arjun tweeted: "The cutest video I have seen in recent times. The power of simplicity. Love it!" He was among the several others who noted the video for its old world charm of romancing with the eyes.

As the video clip went viral, Twitter was filled with memes capturing the funny side --- some involved Gautam Gambhir, Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and even Katrina Kaif.

One tweet read: "Priya Prakash Varrier gave all types of expressions in that two minutes that Katrina Kaif couldn't give in her entire Bollywood career." Priya's debut film, releasing next month, is written and directed by Omar Lulu, and produced by Ousepachan Vaalakuzhy under the banner of Ousepachan Movie House. It stars a bunch of newcomers and has music by Shaan Rahman.

So what do the lyrics mean? As per lyrics sites, the lyrics roughly translate as below:

Even college principal waiting to see internet sensation Priya Varrier

Malayalam actress and B. Com first year student Priya Prakash Varrier's instant stardom -- thanks to her wink and mischievous smile in a 28-second film clip -- has left even her college principal eager to meet her.

Marriette A. Therattil, Principal of the prestigious Vimala College here, is a senior nun attached to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Thrissur.

Therattil told IANS that she learnt lately about how her 18-year-old student has became a "national trend" on social media.

"It was on Monday that I came to know about what was happening on social media about my student. I came to know it very late in the evening as I was busy with meetings. Since it was late and the students had all gone home, I could not meet her," Therattil told IANS.

"Yesterday (Tuesday) was a holiday and I did send her a congratulatory message but did not get a reply. I can understand that she is busy. Today I asked to find out if she has come to college, but I was told she is on leave today," said Therattil.

Therattil faintly remembers Priya from among the 2,500-odd women students in the college, as last month she had come with her parents to seek permission to shoot for the song that has made her an overnight star.

"Since attendance is strict and a must, I told them that they should see that she should not miss classes and gave her the permission (to shoot). Honestly, I never knew that she would rise to this sort of instant stardom, and I am waiting to see her," she added.

Priya, who learns music and dance , was initially selected to do a small role in the upcoming film "Oru Adaar Love'" and the song in the film "Manikya Malaraya", has turned viral in the internet world. In the clip, Priya is seen giving a wink and smiling while flirting with a boy, and it is the mischief, innocence and simplicity in the shots that have touched the right chords with viewers.

The clip has made Priya the rage of the young and the old and is on way to becoming one of the fastest shared in the social media.

Modest in her stardom, Priya told the media that while she was roped in for a small part in the movie initially, she has come to know now that the film's makers are considering doing some changes to the script so as to give her a more prominent role after all the publicity that she has got now.
