How Kangana Demolished Karan Johar, And All He Stands For, On His Own Show

Darpan News Desk IANS, 21 Feb, 2017 12:40 PM
She does not need a hunter in a hand. As fearless as Julia is, she oozes confidence with her blonde curls and blood red lipstick. She stings and emits hot smoke with her quick, sharp words, like a dragon with a dictionary. Then she smiles a faint smile as if saying “peace”.

But the man at the receiving end is squirming away, putting up a brave, sporting front as he giggles at being called a “movie mafia” don who encourages “nepotism”. Even more amusing, is the onlooker — the dashing Nawab, who can never be anything but politically correct, constantly changing expressions from gaping to whispering a “wow” of disbelief to raising his brows in every possible direction. All throughout, he seems ready to fall off the famous coffee couch of Koffee With Karan.

The recent episode with Kangana Ranaut and Saif Alia Khan has been, by far, the most hilarious, entertaining, cut-throat honest conversation dominated entirely by a female star. She continues to prove that she is indeed nothing but a Queen who will not allow the most powerful filmmaker to hold court or be “frivolous” as she bluntly puts it.

She didn't mind reminding Karan that he had made fun of her English at that very show and that episode inspired her to do better.

"Karan, you've been the driving force of my life. If it wasn't for all the rejections and the mocking, I wouldn't have made it," she said, looking straight at Johar, undoubtedly one of the most powerful filmmakers in Bollywood.

This reflects something quite terrific about Ranaut's sense of self. When she was mocked for her accent, she was aware that the accent didn't sound as polished as one expected from a Bollywood star.

Instead of getting all wound up, she took the criticism on her chin and worked on improving it.

And she wasn't afraid to tell the man sitting in front of her that he was the trigger.

But that wasn't all. Ranaut, it appeared, came on the show with the intention of establishing a very intricate power dynamic -- for years, Johar never cast her in any of the big-ticket Dharma project and now she had reached a place where it was essential for him to invite her on a show that he hosts.

Ranaut, it appears is very aware of this shift in the power structure, and she asserted it with casual nonchalance.

Without mincing words, she blatantly called him someone who's 'intolerant' towards outsiders.

"If ever my biopic is made, you'll be the stereotypical Bollywood biggies who is snooty and completely intolerant to outsiders. Flag-bearer of nepotism. The movie mafia."

While this triggered bouts of laughter, Ranaut didn't say this as a joke. Well, at least not entirely.

The unpretentious lady had no fear to say that she has no interests in working with the Khans. Why so? Because she wants to work in a film where she is given an equal role and with the Khans that is not possible. By saying so, Kangana made it very clear that her success in Bollywood will never be driven by any of the Khans.

Karan Johar, whose movies are a spectacular display of wealth, asked Kangana whether she’d like to be poor and in love or rich but without love. To this, Kangana replied, “Karan, your idea of poverty is very different from mine.” Karan’s reaction? He could only manage to smile and take the show further.

Now in an industry where people like to be all sweet and nice in the face of big filmmakers, we wonder what’s in store for Kangana after she “attacked” Karan on the national television.
