Actress Swara Bhaskar, who has come out in the support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, says Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is "regressive and shameful".

Swara on Sunday evening treated her fans and followers to a Q and A session on Twitter, where a fan asked her if she would like to portray a homosexual onscreen in a country where they are still fighting for their identity.

The 28-year-old actress, who holds a Master's degree in sociology from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, shared: "Yes, why not? I would take up any role as long as script offers potential to perform on gay rights I think in India...I think Article (IPC Section) 377 is regressive, shameful and pre-modern! should go!"

Talking about role models, the "Nil Battey Sannata" said: "No one person. Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore for career and (Mahatma) Gandhi, (Nelson) Mandela, Martin Luther King for public life."

What about her wedding scene with screen writer Himanshu Sharma, asked a fan.

"No plans right now! Will announce it loudly when we decide!" she added.
