There's No Such Thing As Chick Flicks, Says Sonam Kapoor

Darpan News Desk IANS, 22 Dec, 2017 02:41 PM
It's time to get rid of the sexist "chick flick" tag films get, and Khoobsurat actress Sonam Kapoor agrees!

The 32-year-old actress called out the reporter, saying her film Aisha is not a "chick flick" neither is Veere di Wedding, her next femme-centric film releasing in 2018.

"It’s so bad. There’s no such thing as chick flicks. Do you call a hero’s film a stud film? No, right? It’s so tacky," Sonam said.

The Neerja actor regretted the fact that hardly any A-list heroes do films led by a heroine.

"I hope that changes very soon. Because if it's a female-driven film, like Khoobsurat, we need to ask Fawad (Khan) to come and do it. Unfortunately, that is the scenario right now," she said. "I guess women need to stop saying yes to films where they don't have anything to do."

Except Shah Rukh Khan in Dear Zindagi was an exception, the actor said. All praises for SRK, Sonam argued that "a lot of the boys don't understand when you become a woman's favourite, you are on the right way."

Sonam said Fawad Khan rose to fame in India after Khoobsurat came out. "When women understand that you're like a Colin Firth or a Hugh Grant, you become a huge star. When women like you and want you, that loyalty doesn't go away," the star said.

But when there's an A-list hero doing a film, does Sonam feel her screen time is threatened? The actress says no.

"Screen time makes no difference to me, as long as I have something to do in that much time. I won't play just a hot girl in a song. I won't be doing such a role because it will be a waste of my time," Sonam said.

"But if I'm playing a Biro (in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) or Bittu (in Delhi 6), I would rather do that because there's an arc to the character and it makes a difference to the story. It's not about the screen time but what you do in that screen time," the actress added.

"I'd rather do that than three songs and two scenes in a film."

Sonam asserted her goal as a film star is to stay authentic to herself.

"To have a sense of style is completely different from following fashion blindly. That's the difference. As soon as you are authentic and an individual, you don't need to project an image."

"I am just being myself, which is why it's easy. Everybody curses me for dressing up," the actress says with a chuckle.

All of Sonam's upcoming films, such as Pad Man, the Sanjay Dutt biopic, Veere Di Wedding and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, belong to a different genre. But this wasn't a planned decision.

"It’s not a planned move. When I sign something, I don’t look back and think I can’t sign something similar," Sonam said. "I just believe in doing the right thing. Everybody thinks I’m really smart, but I’m not."
