CTYP’s 2019/20 Season Reaches for the Stars

    World Day of Theatre for Children and Young People, CTYP’s Artistic Director Carole Higgins, is thrilled to announce a sparkling 2019/20 Mainstage Playbill of outstanding Theatre for Young Audiences from around the globe.

    A delightful series of curated stories awaits; stories that explore themes of embracing our differences, making new friends and reaching for the stars. This is a landmark season that celebrates wonderful stories created by our local, national and international peer TYA companies alongside CTYP’s own effervescent home productions.

    The Winter’s Tale @ Performance Works Outdoor Stage
    July 26-August 10, 2019

    A fanciful fairytale for families of all ages, staged outdoors under a canopy of trees and the night sky. See the stars of tomorrow on our stage, today as we feature outstanding local teen actors in a whimsical production created by Mike Stack.

    The Rainbow Fish @ The Waterfront Theatre
    October 1-6, 2019
    A Mermaid Theatre Production, Co-Presented with Axis Theatre Company
    A brand new story featuring enchanting black-light puppetry for younger theatre goers. The Rainbow Fish learns to share his most prized possessions in this sweet story and two companion tales: Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea and Opposites. All stories are vividly adapted for the stage from Marcus Ffister’s beloved books. Recommended for ages 2-7 years and their grown-up companions.

    The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito @ The Waterfront Theatre
    October 30-November 10, 2019

    In this story of a misfit searching for her place in the world, Mary Jane is a mosquito who doesn’t have wings, but her voice soars to the stars in this new play by Canadian playwright Tomson Highway that weaves music, song and Cree phrases into its storytelling.. After many adventures, Mary Jane learns to make new friends by sharing her language, her kind heart and her songs with the world. Recommended for ages 4+ and their grown up companions.

    PThe fantastical story about the boy who would never grow up is given a lively musical reimagining. A bold new staging that soars boundless imagination, and without wires, in the BC Premiere of this adaptation by Fiona Sauder and Reanne Spitzer with music by Music by: Landon. Recommended for ages 4 years and everyone who is a kid-at-heart

    In Mort’s Village everything has its place, every day is the same and everyone likes it that way. Until one morning Beep arrives from the sky. Recommended for ages 2-7 years, and grown-ups who love the film WALL-E

    The House at Pooh Corner @ The Waterfront Theatre
    February 28-March 29, 2020
    A CTYP Production in association with Presentation House Theatre
    Take a magical trip into the Hundred Acre Wood and discover the wonderful world of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. Music and puppetry without strings make this a very special treat for family audiences, as we explore how the friends around us can shine brighter than any stars in the sky. Recommended for ages 3-8 years, and their grown up productions.

    Still/Falling @ The Waterfront Theatre
    April 21-26, 2020
    A Green Thumb Theatre Production
    The award-winning production, Still/Falling, by Vancouver playwright Rachel Aberle and directed by Patrick McDonald, explores the struggle with anxiety and depression, causing us to fall backwards at times. A realistic, honest and bitingly funny look at the difference between ‘teen angst’ and mental illness and the ways vulnerable youth can start to find their way out of the dark. Recommended for ages 12 years and older.
