Penticton youth host 2nd annual Mela for cancer research

Gyro Park26 Aug '18 @ 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Penticton youth host 2nd annual Mela for cancer research
Last year several young members of the South Okanagan Punjabi community came together to organize a Punjabi Mela fundraiser to support advancements in cancer research and care, while also showcasing their Punjabi culture.

Building on last year’s success, Ikjot Kahlon, Rav Matharoo, Ajeet Brar and other members of the Punjabi community are hosting a 2nd Annual Punjabi Mela Festival on August 26.

Ikjot’s grandmother, Baljinder, passed away in 2016 at the age of 65 after her ovarian cancer had spread to other organs. Her experience initially sparked the idea for a Mela to help support other families impacted by the disease.

The inaugural event raised over $15,000 last year for the BC Cancer Foundation, and the Mela team is hoping for an even bigger turnout from the community this year. They have already received tremendous support from the community and local businesses.

“Everyone is welcome and we would love to see your support,” Ikjot says. “Our whole team works so hard and we know all of our efforts towards the cause can help save lives.”

The Mela team says they plan on building on the event each year and continue supporting a cause that hit so close to home.

“We are very happy to be raising money for cancer research and also raise some awareness for our Punjabi culture at the same time,” she says. “I think my Naniji (grandmother) would be proud.”

The 2nd annual Punjabi Mela takes place Sunday, August 26 from 12pm - 5pm at Gyro Park in Penticton.
