Reach Gala to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society

Coyote Creek Golf Country Club18 Nov '16 @ 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • Reach Gala to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society
Local Surrey student, Daniel Breedveld along with five-team members, is working tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Cancer Society through his upcoming event – the Reach Gala. After working with the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association (BIA) Breedveld is ready to take on his next challenge to help the Canadian Cancer Society.

Over the past three years students of Dr. Kamal Masri’s project management class in Simon Fraser University, Surrey, have participated in the 25tolife project. This project requires the class to form teams that work together on a series of events to raise vital funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. All the proceeds from each of these events goes directly to cancer research and patient care and since its commencement in 2013 the project has raised over $80,000.

Daniel Breedveld and Olivia Hui who are both participating in this project have used their experience interning with the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association to connect with the local community. A Surrey resident, Breedveld knows the importance of networking within his community and has reaped the benefits for the upcoming gala.

“As the filming intern with the BIA, I had the unprecedented opportunity to work with over 50 businesses within the community, from small businesses like Taqueria Jalisco to large companies like FINCAD and SCDC,” says Breedveld. “I gained valuable networking abilities and connected with a lot of great businesspeople in the Downtown Surrey community. Many of these people have made valuable contributions, directly and indirectly, to the success of the Reach Gala.”

The project has proved to be a huge success over the past three years, with students gaining a real understanding of project management, social responsibility, and the power of working together to achieve greater results.
