Chan Centre for the Performing Arts22 Feb '17 @ 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • The Chan Centre Welcomes Jazz Legend Dianne Reeves
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents preeminent jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves, Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. For her highly anticipated Chan Centre debut, Reeves will mesmerize with songs from her most recent album Beautiful Life, as well as favourites from previous recordings, and brand new works.

“We are honoured to present Dianne Reeves, one of the greatest jazz vocalists known to the world today,” says Joyce Hinton, Co-Managing Director of the Chan Centre. “With her rich musical heritage, Reeves masters a wide range of repertoire, making each piece her own with fresh style and unique interpretation. Through Reeves’ famous collaborations with world-renowned musicians, she shows tremendous respect for other artists, and a deep passion for the art of jazz itself.”

Born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Dianne Reeves hails from a wholly musical family. Reeves’ father was a vocalist, her mother played the trumpet, her uncle is famed bassist Charles Burrell, and her late cousin George Duke was a pioneer in both jazz and popular genres. As a child, Reeves’ mother encouraged her love for music, setting her on the path to study with jazz mentors such as Clark Terry and Phil Moore. Reeves’ first studio album Welcome to My Love was released in 1982, launching an illustrious musical career that now spans more than three decades.

She has recorded and performed with several symphony orchestras, including with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and served as the first creative chair for jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Pre-Show Talk: Dianne Reeves - A Jazz Vocalist for The Here and Now! – Wednesday February 22, 2017, 7:15pm @ Royal Bank Cinema, The Chan Centre. Nou Dadoun, host of Vancouver Co-op Radio’s A-Trane program, discusses the legacy of Dianne Reeves. Earlier in her career, Reeves paid tribute to legendary jazz vocalists like Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, proving herself in the crucible of their strongest joys and challenges - The Great American Songbook. In the 21st century, Reeves has brought that jazz sensibility and passion to the music of her own time, forging connections between African, Brazilian, gospel, fusion and soul to produce a signature jazz sound of the here and now.
