Vancouver Pro Musica presents Alan Matheson Septet

Pyatt Hall18 May '19 @ 7:30 PM - 11:00 PM

The Alan Matheson Septet has been an important part of the Vancouver jazz scene for over twenty years. Their first CD release, Intrada, features original compositions by Alan Matheson that reflect a wide range of musical influences from Ellington to Woody Shaw. The septet also plays compositions by band members Rob McKenzie, Dave Branter and Craig Scott as well as jazz classics by Billy Strayhorn, Fletcher Henderson and Stan Kenton.

Their “little big band” sound has impressed audiences at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival and on the air via CBC Radio’s Hot Air and Tonic programs. The personnel is comprised of some of Vancouver’s most versatile musicians, all equally at home in jazz, classical and popular music. They are: Alan Matheson (trumpet, doubling flugelhorn, piano), Rob McKenzie (trombone), Julia Nolan (alto saxophone, doubling soprano saxophone), David Branter (tenor saxophone, doubling clarinet), Jon Roper (electric guitar), Laurence Mollerup (acoustic bass), Craig Scott (drums).

The programme for this special evening of music features the following compositions:
    Avamaa {“Open Land”} (Alan Matheson/Riina Tamm)
    Freshet (Craig Day)
Another Dream Of You (Thomas Houlden)
    À Propos (Adri Lake)
    Juggernaut (Michael Coury)
    (Intermission)
    À L’arrache (Ian Wright)
    O Tinto Quatro (Réjean Marois)
    Folk Songs (Allie O’Neill)
    27 (Ila Zbarsky)
    Splatter (Caralyn Taylor)

Vancouver Pro Musica’s “Further” concert series (formerly Further East/Further West) explores unions of musical styles and genres and aims to involve diverse musical and cultural communities in contemporary music making, providing new opportunities for B.C. composers. Embracing everything from world music to jazz to electroacoustics, the Further series is sure to tingle your musical tastebuds.
