Women’s Work: New Acquisitions 2019

Burnaby Art Gallery 6344 Deer Lake Avenue21 Jun '19 to 25 Aug '19 @ 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Women’s Work: New Acquisitions 2019 exhibition focuses on the Burnaby Art Gallery’s direction, since 2013, to significantly enhance its collection of works created by women artists.

Six years ago, it was discovered that within the permanent collection of more than 5000 works of art, only 22% of works were created by women artists. Although a statistic such as this is common amongst collecting institutions, it was nevertheless identified as troubling.

Through targeted collections practices, the gallery has worked steadily to increase its holdings, so that the collection in 2019 now comprises 25% of works created by women.

This exhibition highlights historical and contemporary works recently acquired through both gift and purchase, with works by Diyan Achjadi, Shuvinai Ashoona, Mary Cassatt, Kate Craig, Leonor Fini, Carole Itter, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Agnes Martin, Tania Willard, and many others.
