J.P. Cormier discovered an innate talent for playing the guitar when he was five years old. He learned faster than he could be taught. As he travelled and worked he added more and more instruments to his arsenal of capabilities. He became indispensable to the bands he worked for. In the early nineties, he became a sideman for one of Canada’s favourite sons, Stompin’ Tom Connors and also became a staple of the recordings at Studio H in Halifax. His work with the CBC spanned musical, production and arranging duties. Accolades aside - and there are many from people like Chet Atkins, Marty Stuart, Waylon Jennings and Gordon Lightfoot - JP sees himself as just a performer.

Daniel Lapp is one of the best known and most influential fiddlers in British Columbia, if not in all of Canada. Inspired by his grandfather, in 1990 he began offering fiddle lessons in Victoria and less than five years later he and the BC Fiddle Orchestra – a dozen young fiddlers from around British Columbia and their backup band – were onstage in front of 60,000 people at the Commonwealth Games. He’s founder and president of the Victoria Fiddle Society and founder of the House of Music in Victoria BC. His work has taken him from coast to coast to coast in Canada, as well as Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Finland and Germany. He has performed with symphony orchestras and at global events like the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, EXPO 2000 in Germany and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games opening ceremonies. Daniel has played on over 100 albums, working and touring with artists including Spirit of the West, Rickie Lee Jones, Barney Bentall, Mae Moore, Beth Orton and Kathryn Tickell.

Pierre Schryer is one of Canada’s leading traditional fiddlers. He is a recipient of numerous titles and awards including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Grand Masters Champion, Violoneux Championnat, and North American Irish Fiddle Champion. Pierre truly captivates an audience with his energy and genuine warmth. His ability knows no bounds, covering styles from Irish, Scottish, Québecois, and Cape Breton to Canadian Old Time, American Swing and more. As leader of his self- titled group, Pierre Schryer Band built an international reputation as one of Canada’s most well respected traditional music ensembles by touring throughout Canada, the USA, Ireland, Europe and the UK since the mid-90s.

Adam Dobres is a highly accomplished guitarist with a natural ability to embody any style of music. He is equally at home with bluegrass, Celtic, jazz, Gypsy, country, folk, old time, rock, blues, and more. His love of the electric and acoustic guitar has taken him around the globe, performing throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. With a taste for experimenting with personal style and a love of touring, Adam has embarked on living his dream. He has performed with renowned musicians playing exotic instruments such as the sitar, Turkish lira and African kora, and toured North America with old time string band Outlaw Social.

Calvin Volrath is a musical prodigy. To date, he has composed near 700 tunes, many of which have become standard contest and dance tunes across North America & Europe. His influence in the fiddle world is very evident. He has to his credit 69 of his own albums, numerous music books of his original compositions and an instructional DVD. Calvin was commissioned to compose 5 fiddle tunes for the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 Opening Ceremonies to represent the various styles of fiddling our country has to offer. He also wrote the theme for the international fiddle convention "Fiddles of the World", held in Halifax NS in July 1999.

    THE PAPERBOYS
    SHANE COOK
    www.roguefolk.bc.ca/concerts/ev20022920

What more perfect an evening could there be than with the Celtic / Latin revelry of Vancouver's Paperboys? Actually, Vancouver is only a part of their geography these days, with band members from Victoria, Seattle, Havana, and Olympia as well! Their music is just as cosmopolitan, yet deeply rooted in traditional music from many countries. Mexican son jarocho mixed in with Irish jigs and reels and a good dose of country and bluegrass with perhaps a dash of white boy reggae. Call it 'Guinness with a tequila chaser while listening to an Americana Jukebox'. Or 'a place where Irish, Mexican and roots music collide.' Of course, this multicultural mix is hardly surprising from a bilingual band whose founding member is Mexican-Canadian and whose players cover a range of musical backgrounds from bluegrass to funk to traditional Scots and Irish music. "A lot has to do with where we're from” says lead singer Tom Landa. "Vancouver is a culturally diverse place which feeds what we do and the music we make."

A Canadian and US National fiddle champion, Shane Cook captivates audiences with technically thrilling and adventurous performances. Noted by The Canadian Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame as one of the “finest fiddlers in the world today,” Shane has distinguished himself as a master of the Canadian old-time fiddle tradition. He also enjoys playing and arranging everything from traditional Irish and Scottish music to pop and bluegrass. Shane is a three-time Canadian Open National Champion and a three-time Canadian Grand Masters Champion. He’s also the only foreign fiddler to win the US Grand National Championship, a feat he accomplished at just 17 years of age!
