The Cultch presents HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan

Vancity Culture Lab20 Oct '17 to 04 Nov '17 @ 8:00 PM - 12:00 AM
  • The Cultch presents HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan
Presented with Diwali in BC as part of this year’s Diwali celebrations, HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan is a one-woman play by Dipti Mehta - winner of the 2016 Overall Excellence Award for Best Solo Show FRINGE NYC and 2015 SAIPAF (South Asian International Performing Arts Festival) award for Best Actress.

HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan is a testament to the humanities and lives of sex workers; a mother's plea for her daughter's life and her honour; a story of the struggles of an unlikely family. See Mumbai’s red light district – the eunuch, priest, pimp, mother, and daughter who call it home – come to life through the versatile and award-winning performance of Mehta. When Rani, who was born and brought up in the Mumbai Brothel, falls in love, she stirs up the ire of the community. What does her future hold? Will she escape her fate?

Featuring original music by Rhythm Tolee and choreography by Broadway's Monica Kapoor, HONOUR: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan’s unique music and dance integrate to bring the world of the Mahabharata – a great epic of ancient India – together with modern day Mumbai.

A portion of the artist’s profits from HONOUR are donated to Apne Aap, an organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sex trafficked victims and children in the brothels.
