  • Celebrate Family Literacy Day with Surrey Kids Read Event

Surrey Libraries is excited to honour Family Literacy Day with its annual celebration, Surrey Kids Read, taking place on January 30th at Guildford Town Centre’s Centre Court from 11-2pm.

The popular free, family event will feature performances by children’s musician Tony Prophet, storytelling by Silly Susie, and African Stages storyteller, Comfort Ero. Local community groups will be on site to provide face painting, activities, and information for children and families. Surrey Libraries’ mascots, Walter and Jazzy, will be there to greet families and take pictures.

Family Literacy Day is a national initiative involving annual events held on or around January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of families reading together and engaging in other literacy-related activities.

“Reading to your children is foundational for school success, but is also a great joy! Build strong brains and family bonds,” says Sara Grant, Manager of Youth Services at Surrey Libraries.  “You can start by picking up a book, and joining us at Guildford Town Centre on January 30 for some music, magic and fun.”

To celebrate Family Literacy Day, Surrey Libraries will also be hosting fun free Family Board Games events at all branches during the month of January. To learn more about these events or Surrey Libraries’ many literacy related initiatives, please visit www.surreylibraries.ca.
