Downtown Yonge celebrates Canada Day with a Living Flag at Yonge-Dundas Square

Yonge-Dundas Square01 Jul '16 @ 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
  • Downtown Yonge celebrates Canada Day with a Living Flag at Yonge-Dundas Square
To honour both Canada Day 2016 and the great diversity of the City of Toronto, the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (DYBIA) is creating a Living Flag at Yonge-Dundas Square on July 1st.

During the event, over 500 participants will don red and white t-shirts, coming together to help create all the parts of the Canadian flag, our national emblem. Photos of the flag will be captured from above.

“Downtown Yonge is thrilled to be presenting the Living Flag for a second year. It is a fun way for people, whether they live in the neighbourhood or are just visiting, to be a part of something special, while celebrating the diversity and community of Canada” says DYBIA Executive Director Mark Garner.

Toronto was recently named the most diverse city in the world. Its spirit of diversity and inclusion is being highlighted in Yonge-Dundas Square with the Community Folk Art Council (CFAC) of Toronto’s much anticipated multi-cultural Canada Day festivities, which include a full day of world music performances.

DYBIA will have support again this year from partner Cieslok Media, who will be providing one of their many digital capabilities – a live video stream in the square, helping to add to the excitement as participants see themselves and watch the flag take shape.

“We are proud supporters of the DYBIA and their initiatives that bring the community together and celebrate diversity,” says Jorg Cieslok, President and CEO of Cieslok Media. “We lead the industry with the latest technology, which allows us to live stream the Living Flag formation onto our stunning digital screens at Yonge-Dundas Square.”

“We’re pleased to be partnering with the CFAC and Cieslok Media in bringing Torontonians together to create a unique experience in celebrating Canada Day,” adds Garner.

Toronto residents and visitors alike are invited to participate in helping create the flag and are encouraged to arrive at the Square early to secure a spot in the flag. Formation line up will begin at 3:30 p.m. Organizers ask that groups of 15 or more who are interested in participating contact DYBIA beforehand to ensure shirt amounts and sizes are available.

Multicultural Canada Day kicks off at Yonge-Dundas Square in Downtown Yonge at noon on July 1, 2016 and runs until 9:00p.m. Come early for the flag formation at 3:30 p.m.
