Meet the Sharma Family

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 02 Feb, 2023 08:03 PM
  • Meet the Sharma Family

Nitin Sharma is the Owner of Lava Events.

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

In India, I was working in the event management industry, looking after the rental business of clubs and restaurants. The industry was undergoing a lot of changes when I decided to move here. My wife had already been here for a few months and then later on I joined her. I began my career as an event manager in 2002, organizing events for the Indian Cricket League and the Indian Premier League. I also worked with some of the top notch DJs in India. Prior to getting into event management, I used to be a software engineer. Currently, I am the owner of Lava Events, an event management company. I am also a realtor. I moved from India with the intention of starting a family in Canada. So once I immigrated, I had my 2 children here, a son and a daughter.

Which year did you immigrate?

I immigrated in October 2008 from Chandigarh, Punjab as a permanent resident.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

It is extremely well organized and clean. I came to Surrey as a new immigrant and immediately felt at home with so many Indians living around. I also found the political system to be excellent. I am a nature lover and love the abundant natural beauty. There’s a plethora of lakes and mountains in British Columbia. In fact, Canada as a whole has amazing landscapes across all provinces. Also, I feel as long as you work hard, Canada offers ample opportunities for success.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?

My wife came to Canada a few months prior to my arrival. Since she was already here, renting a basement, I luckily had a place to stay.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

I didn’t know a soul when I came to Canada. I definitely felt lonely many times, but now I have a great circle of friends and I know lots of families as well.

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

It was easy as I came with an open mind and was ready to take on and do any type of work.

How has your journey in Canada been so far?

Amazing. I had ups and downs but I am happy with the overall results. I want to accomplish a lot more but I am going to take it one step at a time.

How do you see your future in Canada?

I am the owner of a small event company - Lava Events. I am looking into the company’s expansion and I want to expand right across Canada. I aspire to manage FIFA someday.

Biggest problem

Have to go to India every year as my elderly parents are there.

Resolution

I have learned to juggle my professional and personal life in Canada while I am away in India.

Advice for immigrants

Be patient and you will get success.

Memory

I organized a Jagjit Singh Show in Jalandhar, India. It was an audience of 22,000 people. I had an opportunity to have chai with Jagjit Singh and his wife Chitra Singh. I particularly relish this memory as after this show he passed away.
