Thanks to models like the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, open-air motoring doesn’t have to end in early fall.

Combining the two-door versions of the C-class and E-class in this all-new offering, the result is a sleek four-seater with a slick electric soft top that truly allows it to be driven daily year-round. The stubby “shark nose” front end, flat smoked LED headlights, and low-slung hood provide an undeniably sporty look. The near-flush frameless grille houses a large central roundel and single signature blade, intersecting several repeating 3D three-pointed star logos also found dotting the black bumper trim.

The rear is equally as smooth, boasting connected taillamps, a seamless bumper, and dual chrome trapezoidal exhaust outlets. Our loaner had the AMG Line package equipped (+ $3,500), bundling larger central air intakes, larger brakes, 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and more.

Putting the roof up or down is as simple as holding down a button on the center console. The total operation time is 20 seconds, and it can be done at speeds up to 60 km/h. There is another button to deploy the AIRCAP electric wind deflector system, as seen previously on other convertibles in the lineup, comprised of a spoiler above the windshield and a wind blocker behind the rear headrests.

Activating the set prevents swirling air in the cabin, keeping the environment much warmer and quieter than it would be without it. In addition, the AIRSCARF heating function keeps the neck area toasty for occupants when the temperature drops outside.

Possessing a 2,865-millimeter wheelbase, which is 25 millimeters longer than the outgoing C-Class Cabriolet, the rear bench is now actually usable for adults. The 14 millimeters of extra leg room, 22 millimeters of extra shoulder room, and 17 millimeters of extra elbow room make a big difference, and I could even fit a child seat back there comfortably. Similarly, the trunk is quite spacious for the segment and can accommodate 385 liters of cargo (295 if the top is stowed).

The white-leather-upholstered Multicontour front seats (+ $1,200) were quite comfortable and supportive and featured some of the most aggressive adjustable lumbar I’ve come across yet—great for aging enthusiasts such as myself. The settings are found in a submenu on the 11.9-inch portrait infotainment display, so don’t bother hunting for a physical switch. If you find direct sunlight causing glare on the screen, the entire panel is tiltable.

In Canada, the CLE utilizes a single powertrain option: a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The peppy engine is smooth and quiet at cruising speeds, with a pleasant subtle exhaust note at heavy acceleration.

The motor also incorporates mild hybrid technology comprising an integrated starter-generator and 48-volt onboard electrical system that can temporarily boost up to 23 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque during acceleration and reduces fuel use during coasting to improve efficiency.

I had a great time tossing the vehicle into corners, as the aforementioned AMG Line pack includes sports suspension. Compared to the softer standard comfort setup, stiffer springs and dampers keep all four wheels planted without making the ride harsh.

Built at the brand’s Breme, Germany plant, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4MATIC is sold in a hardtop Coupe form factor as well. In stores now.

Highlights:

MSRP: $87,450(includes $5,000 government incentive)

Torque (lb-ft): 295 @ 2,000 rpm
