Big B Reminisces Incomplete Film Based On Dharamvir Bharati's Novel

  • Big B Reminisces Incomplete Film Based On Dharamvir Bharati's Novel
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan got nostalgic about a film based on renowned novelist Dharamvir Bharati's popular book "Gunahon Ka Devta" with wife Jaya Bachchan, which eventually didn't get completed.

"When I was a child, I used to hear a lot about Bharati's novel, 'Gunahon Ka Devta'. During those days in Allahabad and later in Delhi, my mother used to perform in plays of Shakespeare which my father had translated, in the four main tragedies of Shakespeare.

"I read 'Gunahon Ka Devta' at that time, and had that wish of doing a play on it, if there would be one," Amitabh said here at an event for the rechristening of the Bandra Gate Chowk after Bharati, who was also a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award.

"By the grace of God, a few days after I entered the film industry, I got an offer to do a role in a film being made on it. I got the role of Chandar and another delightful part was that the role of Sudha was given to Jaya," he reminisced.

About the shoot of the film, Amitabh said: "We had not got married at that time, but we worked on the film with a lot of dedication... The shooting took place in Allahabad during the summer.

"More people knew Jaya since she was a bigger star than me, but still not many knew her and absolutely no one knew me. About 7-8 reels of the film were made but, unfortunately, it couldn't be completed due to some reasons which we always regret about," he added.

Incidentally, it has been reported that Rekha was also part of this incomplete film and was one of the lead characters.

Amitabh also spoke about the brotherly association between Bharati and his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan as Bharati was his student at the Allahabad University.
