  • 5 Fun Ideas For a Summer Staycation in Vancouver

If you don’t have travel plans this summer, why not have a “staycation” in Vancouver? Stay-at-home vacations are becoming more and more popular as they offer budget-friendly and stress free alternatives to the conventional jet-setting vacation. Here are five fun ideas for a memorable staycation in Vancouver, proving you don’t have to jet off to have a fabulous time!

Go on a train journey
Looking for a unique day trip? Book a train tour with Rocky Mountaineer and climb aboard for a breathtaking journey from Vancouver to Whistler. This 3.5 hour long train ride each way shows you stunning scenery as you travel along the Sea to Sky region. Enjoy picturesque sights like Howe Sound, Mount Garibaldi, Cheakamus Caynon and an extinct volcano before arriving at Whistler Village. The train ride includes a breakfast or afternoon snack at your seat, non-alcoholic beverages and a chance to visit their open air Heritage Observation Car. You can choose to return the same day or extend your stay in Whistler. Book online at
www.rockymountaineer.com

Experience the tropicsat Bloedel Conservatory
A visit to the Bloedel Conservatory will truly transport you to the tropics. Located in Queen Elizabeth Park, this domed paradise features over 200 free flying birds and over 500 tropical plants. Pick up a bird watcher’s check list at the front desk and try to spot Cockatoos, red Macaws, African parrots and more. (Be sure to say hello – many of these chatty birds will answer back!) You also get a chance to explore some of the world’s most endangered ecosystems. From the rainforest to the desert, check out a variety of exotic tropical forests and flowers. There is also a fun Scavenger Hunt offered for children. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for youth, $3.25 for children.

Go camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park
A summer staple, camping is a great way to bond with the family. Pack up your camping gear and head out to the Golden Ears Provincial Park in Maple Ridge. One of the largest campgrounds in BC, there is no shortage of activities to choose from here. The park surrounds Alouette Lake which is ideal for swimming, fishing and boating. Head over to the south side towards the wide public beach, where you can rent canoes and kayaks on a first come, first served basis. Hiking enthusiasts will be pleased with the park’s extensive network of trails, which range from short walks to backcountry trips. The park has three campsites to choose from and it’s advisable to book in advance. Or if camping is not your thing, the Golden Ear Provincial Park also makes for a great day trip!

Take a mini-cruise
Sail into the sunset for an unforgettable evening with Accent Cruises. They have daily dinner cruises which offer a breathtaking view of some of the most
picturesque sights in Vancouver. Departing from Granville Island, the tour continues on to Stanley Park, English Bay and False Creek. On sunny days, you might even catch a glimpse of eagles, harbour seals and the occasional orca near Point Atkinson and Whytecliff Park. Take in these picture perfect views while enjoying a sumptuous dinner on board, with your choice of salmon, chicken or a vegetarian entree. Book your reservations online at www.accentcruises.ca

Hit the slots at River Rock Casino Resort
Longing for a weekend getaway to Las Vegas? River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond is your best local alternative. Head out for a thrilling night of gaming at their casino. It’s no Caesars Palace – but it has everything you need for a great night out, with over a 1000 slot machines, horseracing stakes and the classic game tables. There’s also great line up of famous entertainers, concerts and special events to choose from at their Show Theatre. Feeling hungry? Fuel up at their buffet, which features an all-you-can-eat seafood and prime rib night, every Friday and Saturday. You can also dine at one of their many fine restaurants or check out the international food court. Round off the experience by checking into a room at the hotel and enjoy a relaxing soak in their state-of-the-art Jacuzzi the next day.
