9-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling Into Pit Filled With Rainwater In Delhi

IANS, 21 Jun, 2017 11:46 AM

A nine-year-old boy died after he fell into a pit in a park in Delhi yesterday. The boy, Abdul Khalid, had gone to play in a park in Rohini's Avantika area along with friends last evening when he fell inside the pit filled with rain water, said the police.

His friends, scared, soon left the place. It was only when the child's parents asked his whereabouts that they revealed the incident.

The pit, about 9 to 10 feet deep, was dug to dump leaves for decomposition but was not covered, resulting in accumulation of rainwater inside, said a senior police officer.

It took over an hour to tracing the child. Later, he was rushed to hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and a case is being registered at the Vijay Vihar police station.

Police said there was no signboard near the pit indicating that it was an "out-of-bound" area. There was no fencing around the pit to indicate that it was a dangerous area.

Police will be questioning the park's caretaker to get more details.
