A Day After Conviction, Sajjan Kumar Resigns From Congress

    Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on Tuesday resigned from the party’s primary membership.

     

    Kumar, 73, was Lok Sabha MP from Southwest Delhi when 320 Sikhs were killed in his area — Delhi Cantonment.

     

    Kumar has, however, been convicted by Delhi High Court in a single case of killings of the family of Jagdish Kaur and Jagsher Singh who lost five members in Cantonment’s Raj Nagar in revenge killings against the Sikhs.

     

    Sajjan Kumar has, however, always held primary membership of the Congress and has been active in party affairs in Delhi unit.

     

    Save in 1998 Lok Sabha polls when Kumar along with HKL Bhagat was denied a ticket, he has held sway in the Congress.

     
     
     
     

    In 2004 Lok Sabha polls, his brother Ramesh Kumar was given a ticket in his place from outer Delhi under a tacit arrangement within the Congress. This was done to address outrage against ticket allocation to Sajjan.

     

    Ramesh Kumar won the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009 but lost in 2014.

     

    Sajjan Kumar has also remained a strong party organiser arranging crowds for party rallies.

     

    With Kumar becoming a liability after yesterday’s HC judgment the party sought his resignation.

     

    He relinquished his membership via a letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi today. Gandhi hasn’t commented on the HC verdict yet.
