AAP leader Alka Lamba attacked, Party Points Finger at BJP

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 09 Aug, 2015 12:38 PM
A 19-year-old has been arrested for throwing a stone at AAP legislator Alka Lamba during her anti-drug drive here on Sunday, police said.

Teenager Jatin, who works at a sweet shop, was arrested following Lamba's complaint.

Police said that Lamba, an MLA from Chandni Chowk constituency, sustained simple blunt injury on her head and was discharged from hospital after being administered first aid.

In her complaint to police, Lamba said that Jatin had lobbed a stone when she opposed the encroachment by some shopkeepers in the Kashmere Gate area.

"At the time of the attack, Lamba was outside Shiv Mishthan Bhandar, where Jatin works," Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma told IANS.

"The MLA's medical reports suggested that she had received simple blunt injury on her head. We have arrested the accused following her complaint," Verma said.

Lamba started an anti-drug drive at 5 a.m. from Yamuna Bazar to mark the Quit India Movement Day.

The MLA alleged that the incident was a conspiracy against her anti-drug drive and urged the police to conduct a fair probe into the matter.

"We were holding discussions with drug addicts as a part of the anti-drug drive when I was attacked," Lamba later said at a press conference.

"There is definitely a conspiracy behind it. I am hopeful that police will conduct a fair probe and find out who is behind this attack," she said.

"The motive behind this attack was not to target me but to disrupt our campaign and disperse the crowd," the AAP leader said.

Fellow Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ashutosh tweeted: "AAP's fight (against) drugs will be intensified. AAP MLA Alka Lamba was attacked by drug cartel. Our fight will continue."

In his tweets, he also said that Lamba was attacked by a man working in a sweet shop, which he said was owned by BJP legislator Om Prakash Sharma.

"Locals told us (that the) man (who) attacked Alka Lamba was working in sweet shop. (The) shop is owned by present BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma," he tweeted.

"...she was the only one in the crowd who was hit. It's deep conspiracy. AAP will fight back," he tweeted.
