Arvind Kejriwal To Visit Punjab On May 29

IANS, 26 May, 2017 01:29 PM
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal is set to visit Punjab on May 29 to meet party leaders and volunteers, over two months after the party received a drubbing in the Punjab Assembly polls.

Aman Arora, co-president of state party unit, said Kejriwal would visit to Amritsar for one day and meet party volunteers and the state leadership.

The MLA from Sunam said Baljinder Kaur, MLA from Talwandi Sabo, was entrusted with the task of coordinating Kejriwal’s visit.

His visit assumes significance as the party has been trying to get its act together to play the role of a strong opposition in Punjab since its polls debacle in the state assembly polls.

The problems for the party grew when former state unit convener Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi questioned the “urgency” of the party’s leadership in appointing Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann as the new chief of the state unit.

Moreover, AAP MLA from Bholath Sukhpal Singh Khaira had also offered to resign from the posts of chief whip and spokesperson of the party.
Later, the party faced a setback when Ghuggi, an actor and satirist, resigned from the primary membership of the party and described the election process of appointing Mann as the new state unit chief as “fake and unfair”.

Ghuggi had claimed that Kejriwal did not have even five minutes to spare for the people of Punjab after the poll results while he spent a lot of time in the state before elections.

The Kejriwal-led party had won 20 out of 117 seats in the polls. The Congress had registered a thumping win securing 77 seats, while SAD-BJP managed 18 seats.
