Bhagat Singh's Grandnephew Abhitej Singh Sandhu Killed In Himachal Accident

Darpan News Desk IANS, 29 May, 2016 12:03 PM
Shaheed Bhagat Singh's grandnephew and Aam Aadmi Party activist Abhitej Singh Sandhu was killed in a road accident in Shimla district of Himachal Pradeshm, police said.

Sandhu, 27, suffered multiple injuries when a motorcycle he was riding on alone skidded near Rampur town, some 120 km from the state capital, on Saturday evening.

Sandhu was returning from Kaza in the Spiti Valley. His three friends were following him.

He suffered head and rib injuries and was taken to a hospital in Rampur, where he was declared brought dead, a police official said.

There was also some technical problem with the motorcycle's gearbox and that could also be the reason for the accident, he said.

Sandhu's body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. The cremation will be performed in Mohali on Monday, the family said.

Sandhu was an alumnus of the prestigious Lawrence School at Sanawar in the hill state.

His father Abhey Sandhu had contested the Punjab assembly elections in 2012 as a candidate of Manpreet Badal-led People's Party of Punjab (PPP) but lost.

The father-son duo later dissociated themselves from the PPP and campaigned for the Aam Aadmi Party.

Abhitej Sandhu had campaigned for the AAP in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, his friends said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is the AAP national convener, in a tweet mourned Sandhu's death: "May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family members."
