Canadian Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against TD Bank's Coin-counting Machines

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Jun, 2016 12:25 PM
TORONTO — A Canadian class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of people who used TD Bank coin-counting machines over a three-year period.

The suit alleges that the bank had learned of numerous accuracy problems with its coin-counting machines in the United States but still proceeded with a national rollout of the machines across Canada in January 2013.

The allegations have not been proven in court. TD Bank (TSX:TD) declined a request for comment.

A statement of claim filed against the bank in Ontario by the Toronto law firm Sotos LLP says that the Canadian machines were retired shortly after they were retired in the United States in May 2016.

The suit was filed as a class action on behalf of everyone who used TD Bank's coin-changing machines in Canada between January 1, 2013 and May 25, 2016.

In order to proceed as a class action, the Canadian suit requires certification from the Ontario Superior Court. A similar claim was filed against the bank in April in the United States on behalf of customers who used the U.S. machines.
