Capt. Amarinder Singh To Take Out Anti-Drug Rally In Punjab's Majitha

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 Jun, 2016 01:38 PM
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh today said he will take out a rally against peddling and supply of drugs at Majitha in Amritsar district.

His announcement came on a day when 'Udta Punjab', a Hindi film which deals with the drug problem in Punjab, released in theatres after being cleared by courts.

Mr Singh said, although the people of Punjab will get to see the drug-themed Bollywood film, the issue of drugs still needs to be highlighted.

"Since I have already announced that I will stage a dharna at Majitha, I will take out the rally on a later date," said the former chief minister in a statement, adding, "Our fight against drugs does not merely end with the release of the film as we have to completely eradicate this curse from Punjab".

He congratulated the makers of 'Udta Punjab' for holding their ground and strongly resisting the pressure to dilute its message.

"I hope the film not only helps highlight a serious problem that has finished almost a generation of our youth, but also creates awareness on the disastrous and devastating effect of drugs," the Lok Sabha member from Amritsar said.
