Centre has assured speedy trial for 1984 riots: Sukhbir Badal

    Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Sunday said the union government has assured that all legal measures would be taken to ensure justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
     
    He said the Centre has assured speedy trial and punishment to the guilty.
     
    "The time has come to ensure punishment for those unpunished perpetrators of the 'state sponsored' massacre in 1984," Badal told reporters in Gurdaspur district, 250 km from here.
     
    Badal said a delegation of the Akali Dal, led by union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, had taken up the issue with the government.
     
    He said the union government assured that justice would be provided to the affected people.
     
    The Narendra Modi government had Thursday announced that 3,325 victims of the 1984 riots will be given enhanced compensation amount of Rs.5 lakh each.
     
    Sikhs were targeted by mobs in Delhi and other places after two Sikh bodyguards of then prime minister Indira Gandhi assassinated her in New Delhi.
