Chandigarh Tower Protest Youth Threaten To End Life

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Nov, 2016 02:45 PM
Two unemployed men, who have perched themselves on a mobile telecom tower in an upscale, high security area here near Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's residence, on Saturday threatened to end their lives if they were not given jobs by the state government.

The men, Deepak and Rakesh, on Saturday said that they will end their lives if their demand for jobs was not fulfilled. They are members of the Unemployed Teachers' Union of Punjab and are qualified to get jobs as teachers.

Both have been perched on the 120-feet telecom tower since Thursday and have been braving out in the on-setting winter, especially during night when the mercury drops to 12-13 degrees.

The Chandigarh and Punjab Police have surrounded the tower. All efforts to persuade both men to come down have failed.

Protests on top of water tanks and mobile towers have been taking place across Punjab in the past one decade.
