Darpan News Desk IANS, 25 Mar, 2019 09:09 PM

An Akali councillor, Balkar Singh Rangi, of Ward No. 2, Lalru, was allegedly assaulted with sharp weapons by a group of persons at Dappar near here today.

Balkar Singh, who sustained injuries on his head, alleged that he, along with party leaders, was sitting on the stage during a kabaddi tournament being organised at Dappar, when Gurdeep Singh, alias Soni, and Jaggi, accompanied by nearly 15 unidentified persons, asked him to come down from the stage for a “conversation”.

The victim said when he stepped down from the stage, they cornered him and started beating him up. He alleged that one of them tossed his turban into the air and pushed him. The others attacked with sharp weapons.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where he was referred to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, after his medical examination by a board of doctors. The councillor submitted a complaint to the police along with his medical reports.

The Lelhi police said as per preliminary investigations, personal enmity appeared to be the reason behind the attack. However, the police are also probing other angels in the incident. The police have booked the prime suspects, Gurdeep Singh, alias Soni, and Jaggi, along with their accomplices in this connection at the Lelhi police post.
