  • Delhi Government Bans Chinese ‘Maanjha' After Kite String Kills Three
At least two children and a 22-year-old man were killed and a police officer injured here due to Chinese 'manjha' (kite string), Delhi Police said on Tuesday.

Sakshi Goyal, 3, died when a kite string slashed her throat as she was looking through the sunroof of her family's car in west Delhi's Rani Bagh area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north west) Vijay Singh told IANS: "Sakshi was returning home with her parents around 7 p.m. on Monday after watching a movie in Naraina. Her throat was slit while she was standing in her mother's lap and looking out of the sun roof of the vehicle."

"She fell unconscious and was declared brought dead in the hospital," the officer added. A case has been registered.

A 22-year-old man died after he came in contact with the Chinese 'manjha' in Nihal Vihar area of west Delhi on Monday, police said.

"Zafar came in contact with the sharp kite string while driving a motorcycle. The string sliced his neck," Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Pushpendra Kumar told IANS.

A boy was killed due to the kite string in Tilak Nagar area of west Delhi. Harry too was looking through the sun roof of his father's car when he was cut by the 'manjha'.

"Both Zafar and Harry were declared brought dead in hospital," the officer added.

Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar was injured by the Chinese 'manjha' in east Delhi's Anand Vihar area on Monday.

The Delhi government on Tuesday banned nylon, plastic and Chinese 'manjha' and any other sharp kite-flying thread.

"A lot of injury is caused to the people and birds on account of 'pucca' thread made of plastic or similar such synthetic materials commonly known as Chinese threads," the government said in a notification.
