Gold smuggling attempts foiled in Chennai airport, two held

Chennai, April 12 (IANS) The Air Intelligence officers of Chennai Customs have foiled attempts to smuggle in 4.171 kg of gold valued at Rs 2.01 crore in the last two days, it was announced on Tuesday.
According to Customs, based on intelligence, five male Apassengers who arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight on Monday and two male passengers who arrived from Dubai by Indigo flight on Monday were intercepted at exit gate by Air Intelligence officers.
On examination of their check-in-baggage, 43 gold cut-bits of 24k purity, weighing 2.493 kg and valued at Rs 1.20 crore, were found wrapped around laptop chargers with adhesive tapes.
The gold was seized and one passenger was arrested.
In another case, 992 grams of gold valued at Rs 48 lakh was seized from 12 passengers who arrived from Colombo flight on Monday.
On Tuesday, a male passenger, who arrived from Dubai by Indigo flight was intercepted. On examination of his person, three bundles wrapped with adhesive tapes were found concealed in the rectum, which resulted in recovery one gold ingot of 24K purity weighing 686 grams and valued at Rs 33.05 lakh.
The gold was seized and the passenger was arrested.
The CBI had recently declared a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on seven accused involved in the case. It had declared rewards on Arun Dey, Sukhdeo Poddar alias Sukha, Gopal Das alias Bishal Paul, Saurav Dey alias Guddu, Rahul Dey, Biswajit Das alias Bompa, and Amit Das.
Situated at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, the upcoming airport (Noida International Airport) would cater to all international flights and ease the burden put on the Indira Gandhi International Airport in recent years.
Sources said that BJP candidate and Union Minister S.P.S. Baghel has been provided 'Z' category security cover in Uttar Pradesh by Central Industrial Security Force while other BJP MP Dr Ramesh Chand has been given 'X' category security cover.

There has been a spurt in smuggling of contraband, arms and ammunition in view of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled on February 20, while attempts were also made for infiltration along the Punjab border.
The police said that as per an initial probe, it has emerged that the four youths were busy clicking selfies on the tracks when they were hit by a train. The incident took place at 5.15 pm when the Jan Shatabdi Express, which was going from Sarai Rohilla in Delhi to Ajmer, was crossing the Basai-Dhankot railway station.
