Indian Air Force AN-32 crash lands in Chandigarh with 11 people on board, no casualties

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 20 Sep, 2014 01:02 PM
An Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft with 11 people on board crash landed at the Chandigarh airport Saturday evening, airport sources said.

The aircraft, which was coming back from Jammu and Kashmir after dropping relief supplies to the flood-affected state, broke into three portions as it crash landed and caught fire. The incident took place around 8.40 p.m.

The blaze was however doused by fire tenders inside the airport premises.

A few people on board the aircraft suffered minor burn injuries and were safely evacuated. IAF authorities alerted authorities in Chandigarh, especially fire brigade, hospitals and police.

There were 11 people on board, including five crew members. The rest were personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The exact cause of the fire on the aircraft was not yet known, officials at the airport said.

The IAF has ordered a probe into the incident, the sources said.

Chandigarh is a defence-cum-civilian airport which is managed by IAF authorities. The IAF operates transport aircraft, including Russian made IL-76 and AN-32, from the airport for various locations in the region, especially connecting Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.
