Man kills all members of brother's family; surrenders before police

Bhubaneswar, April 12 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed the entire family of his elder brother due to a land dispute in Odisha's Cuttack district, the police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place at Kusupur village in the state's Cuttack district. Accused Shiba Prasad Sahoo (42) confessed to the crime through a video message and sent it to his village sarpanch and few others. He later surrendered before Balichandrapur police in Jajpur district.
The deceased were identified as Alekha Chandra Sahoo (46), his wife Rashmi Rekha Prusty (41), their daughter Smruti Sandhya (19), two sons Smruti Sahil (18) and Smruti Saurav (16).
In the video message, Sahoo alleged Alekha and his family members were torturing him from a long time over a land dispute. "They thrashed me last night over the dispute. So, I lost my consciousness and killed them. I am ready to face punishment as per law." He recorded the video before surrendering himself.
Cuttack (rural) SP, Jugal Kishore Banoth said, "We have started investigation into the case where five persons of a family have been killed. In preliminary investigation, we have found that family dispute is the reason behind the murder."
The accused is now in police custody and further details of the incident will be known after interrogating him, he said.
The Indian Embassy in Kiev stated that the helpline numbers are being set up at the respective check-points to facilitate evacuation through the borders. These control rooms will be based in Poland, Romania and Hungary and they will be managed by the Indian officials posted in those countries.
On Thursday, India's Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla had stated that Jaishankar has spoken to concerned officials in Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia for setting up camps on the border areas for evacuation of stranded Indian nationals.
An official spokesperson said the affected people or their relatives could call from within Punjab on helpline number 1100 and others from outside India on +91-172-4111905 for seeking information in this regard.
Amid crisis related to wearing of hijab in classrooms, an Amritdhari (baptised) Sikh girl was asked to remove her turban in the reputed Mount Carmel PU College here in accordance with the February 10 High Court's interim order. Some parents of the college also complained of being targeted after their daughters were asked to remove the hijab.
The brother-in-law of SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, Majithia, who was sent to the Ropar jail during his judicial custody, applied for regular bail and his bail plea will come up for hearing on Friday.
