Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne Runs Along 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh At Sukhna Lake

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 04 Feb, 2016 10:57 AM
Former Indian sprinter Milkha Singh and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne ran together at Sukhna Lake this morning. Kathleen Wynne, a Milkha Singh fan, had accepted his invitation to join him for a run at Sukhana Lake sometime ago.

“This is for the first time that I am jogging in the open since my arrival in India. Moreover, it’s an honour for me to have Milkha Singh as my jogging companion. This is not a promotional event but a healthy symbol of friendship between India and Canada. It’s good to be here at Sukhana Lake and watching people in large numbers,” said Wynne.

Singh welcomed Wynne with a bouquet. “You look even fitter than me,” Wynne told him.

While appreciating Milkha’s love for running at this age she said, “ He still moves quick and fast, if his age is considered,” said Wynne.

She also accepted Milkha’s appeal to allow the training of Indian athletes at the Toronto-based world athletics club.

“Wynne accepted my invitation without waiting for a moment. It’s an honour to have her here in my hometown. I want to see Indian budding athletes getting trained in Toronto,” said Milkha. In reply, the Ontario Premier said, “ We will surely talk about it with Ministry of Tourism and Culture besides Sports Minister Michael Coteau”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, in the national capital.

“He congratulated us on our party’s win (on Oct. 19)... he’s very encouraged about the possibilities with the federal government as well,” Wynne told the Star immediately after the meeting.

“(Modi is) very interested in having the prime minister come to India. It’s part of his positive feeling about the election so he’s looking forward to that,” she said.
