Player suspended after Nova Scotia hockey player suffers head injury

Darpan News Desk, 14 Oct, 2016 01:20 PM
TRENTON, N.S. — A junior hockey player from Cape Breton has been suspended for the rest of the season after an opposing player was hospitalized with brain bleeds and swelling.

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League says on its website that Jordan Breen of the Glace Bay Junior Miners has received an indefinite suspension that will be revisited once a full medical report on the condition of 18-year-old Luke Spicer has been completed.

Darren Cossar, the league's executive director, confirmed Friday that the suspension is for the remainder of the season, including playoffs.

Police in New Glasgow, N.S., are also investigating the case.

Spicer was released from hospital this week after an on-ice incident Sunday during a rough Junior B game between his Pictou County Scotians and the Junior Miners. The Pictou team said Spicer is improving each day but has "a long road ahead of him," and will not return to his university studies until 2017.

The team said he has two brain bleeds and swelling and bruising of the brain, as well as lip and mouth injuries and a shoulder sprain. Team officials have refused to discuss what happened, but in an earlier Facebook posting the team said there were some "some tense and scary moments.''
