Punjab Congress MP summoned for casteist remark

Chandigarh, June 16 (IANS) The Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes on Wednesday summoned Congress' Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu for personal hearing on June 22 for allegedly hurting the sentiments of BSP workers.
Bittu stirred up a row after he said the 'sacred' seats of Anandpur Sahib and Chamkaur Sahib have been given to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)
Chairperson Tejinder Kaur said the commission has received a complaint from Pawan Kumar Tinnu against the viral video and news in which Bittu used unparliamentary language.
She said the commission has decided to investigate the matter and summoned Bittu to appear personally under section 12(2) of the Punjab State Schedule Castes Commission Act of 2004.
Bittu has posted a video on his Facebook page, commenting on the newly forged SAD-BSP alliance. BSP leaders called the comment casteist and held protests across the state.

The meeting comes a day after India flagged its concerns to Pakistan during the second round of the talks on the Kartarpur corridor that took place between delegations of the two countries in Wagah on the Pakistani side of the border.
Acting on the complaint lodged by Arunima Ghosh, police arrested Mukesh Shaw, a resident of Garfa area in south Kolkata, late Sunday night, the officer said.
"I will decide on his resignation only tomorrow, after I return to Chandigarh. I will have to look into the contents of the resignation letter before taking a decision," Amarinder Singh said.
With 31.9% Dalits, Punjab has the highest proportion of SCs to its total population. However, their representation in landholdings in the state is far from proportional.
According to the official, Ashraf Sheikh has "confessed" that he killed Khushi Parihar because he suspected her so-called character and "closeness" with some men.
Ending speculation, Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday sent his resignation to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder singh at his official residence in Chandigarh.
