Punjab government defeats no-confidence motion

Darpan News Desk IANS, 23 Dec, 2014 11:29 AM
The Akali Dal-BJP alliance government in Punjab Tuesday defeated a no-confidence motion in the assembly.

The motion was moved by Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar of the Congress after cabinet minister Bikramjit Majithia was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in a drug smuggling racket.

The no-confidence motion was defeated by a voice vote. Akali Dal alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party voted against the motion.

The assembly earlier witnessed noisy scenes as Congress members disrupted the proceedings and created ruckus when Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal rose to speak.

The house had to be adjourned three times due to the ruckus.

On the summons issued by the ED, Majithia, who was present in the assembly, said he was called as a witness and not as an accused.
