Punjab Police bust module linked with foreign-based terrorists

Chandigarh, May 5 (IANS) Punjab Police have busted a module linked with foreign-based wanted terrorists Lakhbir Singh, alias Landa, and Satbir, alias Satta, with the arrest of one of their operatives after recovering 10 pistols from his possession, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said here on Friday.
The arrested has been identified as Gurbhej Singh of Tarn Taran. He has a criminal background and had recently been released from Goindwal Sahib Central Jail.
Police have also named Sukhdeep Singh, Lakhbir Singh, Satnam Singh, Yadwinder Singh, and Baaghi Singh in the FIR.
DGP Yadav said acting on a tip-off accused Gurbhej Singh was arrested after retrieving pistols along with magazines from location pinpointed by Landa and Satta.
Police teams from Tarn Taran district promptly laid a trap and arrested him, when he was travelling on his motorcycle. The DGP said the police recovered the bag containing 10 pistols, including seven .32 bore and three .30 bore, from his possession.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said Gurbhej Singh, along with his associate, Sukhdeep Singh, who is currently lodged in Central Jail Goindwal Sahib, had conspired to receive firearms.
He said as per preliminary investigations, Gurbhej Singh was in desperate need for money and was lured by gangsters to work for them. He was also in touch with Yadwinder Yada and Germany-based Baaghi Singh, he said, adding the role of both is being probed.
The case will come up for final hearing on July 5 after the summer break. Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain refuted the allegations of illegal detention and said not even a single officer was detained.
According to sources, Singh, a resident of Faridkot, was the person who had launched the attack on Monday. A rocket-propelled grenade or RPG was fired from the street that shattered the window panes of Punjab Police's intelligence headquarters in Mohali.
Lt Gen Aujla, an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, was commissioned in December 1987 and has had an illustrious military career spanning 35 years during which he has held varied prestigious command, staff and instructional appointments.
The area around the Intelligence Bureau office has been sealed and investigation is in progress. A bomb disposal and forensic squads have been positioned at the spot. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann spoke to Director General of Police V.K. Bhawra and sought details about the incident.
Notably, the police detained several people, including party workers, who were not allowing the SDMC to carry out the demolition drive at Shaheen Bagh. After the agitation was quelled, the bulldozer moved forward to demolish the illegal encroachment, an iron structure in front of a building. It is at this juncture that Khan reached the spot and was seen speaking to the officials.
