Punjab to get 2,000 MW solar power plant

Darpan News Desk IANS, 19 Aug, 2014 08:15 AM
Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal Tuesday announced the setting up of a 2,000 MW solar power plant in Punjab to augment power generation in the state.

The minister, during a visit here Tuesday, met Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and other senior officials to discuss reforms in the state's power sector, besides further enhancing its power generation capacity.

Punjab has been facing a major power crisis for the past few years. The situation was bad this summer too.

The state experienced power cuts ranging from five to 15 hours in different areas despite Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal claiming that Punjab would be power surplus and would sell power to other states and even to Pakistan.

The Hindu newspaper, which has its main office in Chennai, has asked its employees not to bring non vegetarian food to the dining room because the smell offends vegetarian members of the staff. Is it an illiberal step? In the times we live, dietary restriction, or license, would be the wrong measure to gauge liberalism in a newspaper office.
